Newest EOC member signed anti-public school pledge

Somebody please tell Gervais this is a joke.

Somebody please tell me that the newest member of the Education Oversight Committee is not a signatory of an oath against public education … a pledge that says:

“I proclaim publicly that I favor ending government involvement in education.”

According to this press release (pdf), Julie Hershey of Greer is Mark Sanford’s latest appointee to the Education Oversight Committee, the group charged with supervising our public schools.

But the press release neglected to mention one thing.

Ms. Hershey is a signatory of a pledge against these very same schools, according to the website of the “Alliance of Separation of School and State,” the California-based group that champions the above oath. She’s been a signatory since at least as far back as 2004, according to an archived version of the site.

If this scenario – the governor appointing an anti-public school oath signatory from Greer to the Education Oversight Committee – sounds familiar, there’s a reason.

What the heck is going on here?

I was a teacher in Greenville County when she was on the board of trustees there. It was a nightmare. Sometimes I really fear for our state.

The Governor is just upset because Sheri Few and Katrina Shealy got waxed...

Our governor, the laughing stock of the news shows and Internet blogs, is consistent. You've got to give him that!

He's light in his Italian leather loafers.

And doesn't he support for chairman of the state board of education that home-school kook/chick from Clemson?

Ross-- Look at House District 41 candidate Annie McDaniel. She just filed to run for the Fairfield School Board yesterday.

Re: What the heck is going on here?

Who knows? Maybe the Governor wants someone to focus on actually educating children rather than defending status quo of how we fail to educate children today.

Tom: The nightmare is the Greenville County School District that fails to educate our students to the the degree that 40% of them do not graduate from high school on time. Julie is long gone from the school board, the nightmare of the school boards failure goes on and on and on...

Swamp Fox, I think you are completely missing the point. No matter how for or against educating children you may be...the candidate the governor selected to oversee public education has publicly endorsed the statement that she is absolutely against public education. Example: Whether or not our military was in shambles or the finest in the world, if the President appointed a Secretary of Defense who was publicly against the U.S. even having a military I would hope you would be saying "what the heck is going on here."

Effecitively the governor has taken some one who publicy decries, and is diametricly opposed to there being such a thing as public education, and put her in a crucial position in the operation of a system she deplores.

Take note Swampfox, she is not against the operation system as it currently is, or against the status quo in the system...she is against the system itself. There is a huge difference. We are looking at the difference between highering a new highschool football coach who wants to change up the offense and defense on the team because he thinks the old coach was an idiot (changing the status quo), versus (similar to this situation) highering a new football coach who is categorically opposed to the idea of the highschool actually having a football team in the first place.

What exactly is it that you don't get about this?
