House 81: Trojan Horse in Horse Country

UPDATE 7/20/08: According to the Aiken Standard, Scott Singer has returned all but $3,000 of the funds sent to his campaign by Howard Rich, noting that he did not feel comfortable getting so much money from a single source.

Scott Singer’s ill-fated campaign for House District 81 didn’t get any contributions from Howard Rich and his associates, except for a lot.

Based on disclosures filed Thursday,
SCRG dutifully funneled gobs of Rich's out-of-state money into the open-seat race against eventual GOP nominee Tom Young.

You're going to find this hard to believe, but Howie's SC puppet group made sure Aiken voters had no idea … none of this money was pumped in until after the final ethics disclosure.

Those rascals!

Interesting . . . how much funding do you receive from the NEA and SCEA?

Anonymous said...

you missed the $3000 from the SC Club for growth.

Anonymous #1,

How do you type with your head up Howie's ass?

BBQ, Politics, and whatever the Teacher's Union wants instructs you to post . . . niiiiccee blog

SC Education System is a bottom dweller. Look at all the attempted reforms dating back to Dick Riley . . . pathetic results.

Anonumous #4,

You keep sucking on Howie's pipe. Maybe he'll give you a voucher.

It's even worse than you think. Singer evidently filed both a disclosure report, and then an amended disclosure report, both on the final filing date (7/10). All of the Rich money shows up only on the amended report. I can only construe this as an attempt to hide all that from rubes like me who checked the ethics committee web site early enough in the day that I only saw the first report.

Yea Singer did amend his report exactly one day after his initial filing. He had to amend it to add the Howie Rich LLC money. He probably had those checks in a stack ready to send back until the bill from his consultants came in he decided to put expediency above principle. During the campaign he never did say he "supported" "vouchers" but he did say that he "sympathized with both sides" of the debate. But of course double and triangulation has been a way of political life for County Council Singer and to include his two unsuccessful runs for House 81.

What about all that TV that Singer ran? It's not in his ethics reports.

Maybe Singer will amend his report again. Or, as we recall, most of his TV were spots of Sanfraud extolling the virtues of Mr. Singer. So maybe he paid for them through some of his fly by night organizations. We will never know who spent exactly what on this race but what we do know is that Singer sold his soul to the devil and will do or say anything to strengthen his ego through the acquisition of power through position.

I not only found a $1,000 contribution from the SC Club for Growth, but also an additional $10,000 from people associated with SC Club for Growth. These people (mostly from the Charleston area)also gave to other candidates including Nutt, Whitehurst, Shealy, etc. So, Mr. Singer got $11,000 from SC Club for Growth and they also paid for 2 negative fliers against Tom Young. Mr. Singer also got $23,000 from Howie and friends and at least 2 fliers and radio ads trashing Tom Young paid for by SCRG. Regardless of what you think about vouchers, this influx of money from outside of the district may not be illegal, but it is wrong.

Why does Singer have this $29,000 plus surplus and no reported expense for his prime time tv ad buy?

Anonymous said...

Thanks for compiling this. And as I said on my blog, Singer is no stranger to fudging the numbers to make himself look good. So all this shouldn't come as a surprise.

Yeah, Scottie suffered from a bout of TM -- Temporary Morality -- but don't worry, the Jr. RINO Ranger will be back up to his old tricks next election cycle. It's great to see that the blogland pushed Singer to the point of TM. Too bad it isn't a chronic condition.

The Aiken Standard quoted Scott Singer as saying he has returned all but $3,000 of the $15,000 sent in by New York-based political activist Howard Rich and his political network, however, I count that Mr. Singer received $21,000 from Howie and friends. Mr. Singer is not counting the $6,000 from individuals Yvonne Rich, Joseph Stilwell, Alan Pomerantz, Douglas Levine, Paul Farago, and Stonecreek Group. He also received $11,000 easily linked to the SC Club for Growth.
